SUNY Geneseo is experiencing a banner year for Fulbright Awards with the selection of a record four honorees – three grant recipients and one alternate – from six Geneseo applications. All recipients received English teaching assistantships (ETA) and will be teaching English part-time to non-native English-speakers, while also completing projects of the own part-time and serving as cultural ambassadors for the United States.

SUNY Geneseo students raised a record $171,000 in Saturday’s 10th annual Relay for Life, a signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS) that helps support cancer research and support services for cancer patients. The event raised more than $131,000 last year.

SUNY Geneseo recognized individual students and student organizations, a faculty member and community partners with 2015 Volunteer and Service Awards recently during the college’s annual volunteer and service awards dinner. The college’s Advisory Committee on Volunteer and Service Programs created the awards in 2011 to recognize the awardees for their high level of commitment to service with the college’s community partners.

Teams from SUNY Geneseo’s entrepreneurship program won six of the 12 awards presented last night at the regional semifinals of the New York Business Plan Competition (NYBPC) in Rochester. The six teams will advance to the statewide competition in Albany April 24, where they will compete with finalists from nine other Regional Economic Development Council zones.

SUNY Geneseo’s Access Opportunity Program (AOP) is often referred to as a "family," and for many students the AOP office in Blake Hall is their home away from home.

SUNY Geneseo’s University Police Department has received accreditation status from the New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation Council.

Letchworth State Park and the State University of New York at Geneseo announced the formation of a formal partnership today, aimed at providing greater hands-on educational experiences and research opportunities at the new Letchworth Nature Center. As part of the 5-year cooperative agreement, the college will help develop and identify educational opportunities, research and environmental restoration projects, programming, and exhibits at the new center.

Thomas J. Kilcullen has been named chief of the SUNY Geneseo University Police Department. Kilcullen came to Geneseo as interim police chief in January 2014 after serving in the University at Albany Police Department, where he rose to the position of deputy chief of police and chief investigator.

Geneseo cut the ribbon today to officially open the renovated and sustainable Bailey Hall on campus, now home to four social science departments: anthropology, geography, psychology and sociology.

In 2012, the college issued a statement about its mission to be increasingly sustainable for the environment and has followed up by creating the Office of Sustainability.

Academically talented students with financial need will benefit from a $639,136 grant the National Science Foundation has awarded SUNY Geneseo to recruit students interested in geology, geochemistry and geophysics programs at the college.

SUNY Geneseo is staging “The David Dance,” a production written and directed by 1989 Geneseo alumnus Don Scimé, Feb. 10 – 15 in Brodie Hall’s Robert Sinclair Theatre. The Feb. 10 – 14 shows begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available online and at the MacVittie College Union Box Office. The Brodie Hall Box Office also will be open for ticket sales Feb. 10 – 14 from 4 – 8 p.m. and Feb. 15 from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Seven SUNY Geneseo students will be among those presenting projects to address global challenges at the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting March 6-8.

Contemporary portrait painter Ilene Sova will address her work to raise awareness of sexual violence through art as SUNY Geneseo’s next All-College Hour speaker Feb. 4 at 2:30 p.m. in the Doty Recital Hall. Her work also will be on display in the MacVittie College Union. Both her address and exhibit are free and open to the public.

SUNY Geneseo Professor of Education Leigh O’Brien has won a prestigious Fulbright Scholar grant to teach and conduct research at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik during the fall 2015 semester.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees today appointed Denise A. Battles, currently provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), as the new president of SUNY Geneseo. Her appointment is effective on or about July 1, 2015.

SUNY Geneseo's "exemplary practices of community engagement have earned the college the highly respected Community Engagement Classification for 2015 from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Geneseo is among 361 colleges and universities nationwide that now have the designation.

The State University of New York at Geneseo has been named to President Obama's 2014 Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction in the Interfaith Community Service category, a national recognition of a college or university for a clear commitment to community service and service learning. Geneseo also is on the honor roll in three other categories: General Community Service, Economic Opportunity, and Education.
