Geneseo students raised $162,208 in last weekend’s Relay for Life, a annual fundraiser that supports the American Cancer Society. The student-run 24-hour event in the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena is packed with activities and speakers and helps not only to raise money for cancer research but also to sustain services for cancer patients.

In one of his final appearances at a GOLD event, Tom Matthews (above), associate dean of leadership and service, will moderate the Geneseo Forum Event “What It Takes to Take the Lead: What Do Leaders Need to Know Today” on April 26, featuring three Geneseo alumni who have made a mark in their fields.

Geneseo is continuing to implement the highest priority (Phase I) action items that were identified in the Geneseo 2021 Strategic Plan. Out of a pool of $1 million dollars identified to advance those items, $350,000 was directed to time-sensitive student recruitment efforts.

During his four years at Geneseo, Justen Geddes has become a mathematician, biology researcher, athlete, chief of the student first-response emergency team, an anthropologist, and has studied in Brazil. With each experience, he challenged his idea of his limitations.

Violin students will have a rare opportunity to enhance their technique at a master class on campus with Jennifer Lee, a highly regarded orchestra musician who has performed throughout the United States and abroad. The class is scheduled April 19 at 7 p.m. in the Doty Recital Hall and is free and open to the public.

Two SUNY Geneseo philosophy majors, seniors Eva Reda-Kendrick and Brian Pattison, are presenting papers at the Gonzaga Undergraduate Philosophy Conference in Spokane, Wash. Both students based their papers on essays they wrote for different philosophy courses taught by Professor Ted Everett.

Julia Tannenbaum paired art and business together throughout her time at Geneseo to help build economic development across Livingston and Wyoming counties. At Geneseo, she declared a major in business administration with a minor in communication and art history.

Five SUNY Geneseo students recently made research presentations at the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at the University of Central Oklahoma. NCUR is a component of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which is dedicated to supporting high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship.

The Yards for Yeardley walk on the College Green April 26 is among events on campus during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.

Three Geneseo students have received 2018 Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence. SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson presented the awards to the following Geneseo students, all seniors: Jeffrey Doser from Penfield, N.Y.; Justen Geddes from Dryden, N.Y.; and Kaitlin Pfundstein from Wantagh, N.Y.

As a cost-savings and sustainability effort, the College is replacing traditional lights on campus with Light Emitting Diode (LED) illumination. Forty-four projects have been completed in the switch-over since 2015, and several are in progress, according to George Stooks, assistant vice president for facilities and planning.

When asked to explain what winning a 2018-19 U.S. Student Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) award to Uruguay means to her, Sarah Simon ’17 replies in Spanish, “No fue el pez el que descubrió el agua” or “It wasn't the fish that discovered water.” This maxim has guided her journey since Geneseo.

Students are making final preparations on their projects for presentation during GREAT Day April 17 (Geneseo Recognizing Excellence, Achievement & Talent). This is 12th year of the annual event, a college-wide symposium celebrating the creative and scholarly endeavors of Geneseo students.

Hundreds of hours of community service, involvement, and experiential learning have been the hallmarks of Casey Vincelette’s ’18 Geneseo experience.

Sotiri Athanasopoulos ’18 first discovered Geneseo while playing for the Bay State Breakers, a junior hockey team in Boston.

SUNY Geneseo alumnus Matthew McClure ’16 is among Geneseo’s latest 2018-19 U.S. Student Fulbright award winners. McClure won an award as an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) for South Korea. Simon’s award is for Uruguay. Sarah Phillips ’18 also has been notified that she is an alternate candidate for Colombia.

Junior chemistry and physics double major Luke Holtzman has been named a 2018 Goldwater Scholar in a national competition recognizing promising juniors and sophomores from the United States who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.

Thai American playwright Prince Gomolvilas is teaching an intensive playwriting seminar for 11 Geneseo students through April 13.

Submissions are now open for all Geneseo students, faculty and staff to showcase their talents at the 2018 Key Bank Rochester Fringe Festival. As in previous years, Geneseo is expected to offer a full day of free entertainment.

A venerable SUNY Geneseo faculty member, Ronald Herzman, Distinguished Teaching Professor of English, is retiring at the end of the school year after 49 years with the College and will be presenting his farewell lecture April 13 at 4 p.m. in Room 202 of Newton Hall. The event is free and open to the public, and a reception will follow in Milne Library.

SUNY Geneseo alumni spanning the years 1976 – 2017 will participate in a celebration of 50 years of dance at the College during the Dance Ensemble’s performance of “50Live: Dancing Past to Present — Celebrating 50 Years” April 19-22 in the Alice Austin Theatre.

Repertorio Español, the acclaimed off-Broadway Hispanic theater company, is bringing its production of the comedy “La Gringa” to SUNY Geneseo for two performance April 11 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. The Obie Award-winning production about a young woman exploring her identity is the longest-running Spanish language play in off-Broadway history.

SUNY Geneseo’s spring production of “She Loves You” is the revival of a euphoric romantic comedy with a soaring score, and the Department of Music will be staging the production April 4 – 8 in the Doty Recital Hall.

First-generation college student Dillon Ramsey ’18 discovered an unexpected passion for physics, computer programming and mechanical engineering in Geneseo’s close-knit Department of Physics and Astronomy.
