GENESEO, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo’s String Band Square Dance will take place on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom.
The String Band, directed by Department of Music Lecturer Jim Kimball, will be playing live at the event. The String Band will perform a myriad of tunes, including fiddle music and old-time country music.
The dances are designed for the community, allowing for the participation of any student, faculty member, staff member or community members. The event will include basic dancing instructions.
“Some [participants] are folks who have grown up doing these dances at rural events in western New York,” said Kimball. “Others are brand new to square dancing, and we always seem to get them all dancing together.”
The dances will include Eastern style dancing and waltzing. In addition, polka dance and a simple line dance are likely to occur at the event.
“The dances are mostly repetitive and uncomplicated and will generally be taught or walked through before the music starts—we start with the easiest dances and add figures as the evening progresses,” said Kimball. “Beginners are very welcome and always seem to have a good time.”
General admission is $3; for students it is $1. Children ages 12 and under can get in for free. Refreshments will be available at the event, courtesy of the MacVittie College Union’s Starbucks, along with free parking at any faculty parking lot.
