What Deliberative Dialogues Are

How Deliberative Dialogues Differ from Debating

Deliberation Ground Rules

We are pleased to invite you to participate in this fall's series of Deliberative Dialogues.  A brief introduction/description of the Deliberative Dialogue follows below.

"General Education and the Geneseo Experience"

What is it that students should learn? What are essential skills for the 21st century? Are there essential ideas and concepts that all students should gain or is the mission of the College to awaken a desire for life-long learning? How can we ensure that students do learn what is deemed essential? Should the “Geneseo experience” be transformational or is it as some would claim merely “checking off boxes” toward graduation? Can we accomplish our goals within the present curricular structure?

Within this dialogue, we will focus on “the big picture.” Can we define what a Geneseo graduate should be and can we accomplish such development within our General Education requirements? It would seem appropriate to have similar discussions within majors and programs. Do our goals drive our course offerings or is it the other way around?

Please join the deliberation as we seek to find common ground and determine a course of action on this important issue facing the college community.

We have scheduled three sessions for this Dialogue:

Date/Time/Location

November 17, 1:00-2:00p, Milne 104
November 18, 2:00-3:00p, Milne 105
November 20, 11:00a-12:00p Milne 104

You can register to participate in a dialogue by e-mailing the TLC at tlc@geneseo.edu.

Please include the date for the dialogue you would like to participate in the subject line of the e-mail.  Attendance in each dialogue is limited in order to ensure a discussion where everyone's voice is heard.  We will have a waiting list if interest exceeds the number of registration spots.
