Construction Update: Sturges Quad to Be Completed, Other Projects Underway

Map of campus closures

As the campus community gears up for Commencement, the facilities team is already thinking beyond May 12. Beginning in earnest May 14, the campus will see the completion of a range of projects that have been underway this semester and the start of some shorter-term initiatives that are expected to be completed by the fall or within a few months of the start of the 2018-19 academic year.

These initiatives include:

Sturges Quad

Summer status: Some access points to Sturges Quad will begin to come back online over the summer months and by the fall semester, the area will be fully operational. Quad improvements include replacing asphalt with concrete on the sidewalks, and adding new landscaping and returning access to the historic and much-loved icons — the Seuss Spruce and the Painted Tree.

Sturges Quad to the Integrated Science Center, Milne Library and Newton Hall

The infrastructure project continues, with the next phase of the project stretching from Sturges Quad to the Integrated Science Center, Milne Library, Newton Hall and Parking Lot A. Work will begin on May 14.

During this phase, building entrances closest to the construction work will be closed and pedestrians will need to use alternate entrances to these facilities. The same goes for pedestrian walkways in the area (see the construction map for alternate paths). This phase of the project may also get particularly noisy during the project. Watch for email alerts regarding potential high-volume construction periods.

In addition to the replacement of underground utilities and new site surface improvements, this phase of the infrastructure project will replace various outdated main electrical equipment such as switchgear, transformers and switches. Facilities included in this phase will experience scheduled power outages: Clark A, the heating plant, MacVittie College Union, Sturges Hall, South Hall, Welles Hall, Fraser Hall, Wadsworth Auditorium, Erwin Hall, Blake Hall, Newton Hall, Lauderdale Health Center and Jones Hall. The power outages will last for short durations of 4 hours or less. Temporary external generators will be brought in to serve as alternate power sources for the affected buildings.

Completion date: Work in these phases will conclude in mid-August.

Walkways May-Aug 2018

Northside of Blake Hall to University Drive

The last phase of the infrastructure project will begin in mid-August and take place on the northside of Blake Hall to University Drive. This phase will replace old asphalt and walkways with a new concrete drive and walkways.

Completion date: Late fall.

All Academic Buildings

As part of the campus energy master plan and compliance with Governor’s Executive Orders 88 and 166, this project will install utility metering at individual campus buildings for electricity, gas, steam and water. Electronic collection of utility usage will occur at a central station on campus.

Installation will begin over the summer of 2018 and will continue in phases into 2019.

Completion date: Fall 2019.

Softball Dugout

This project will replace the old dugouts with a masonry block dugout.

Construction will take place over the summer of 2018.

Completion date: By the beginning of the fall 2018 semester.

The Myrtle A. Merritt Athletic Center

This project will replace the old rubber flooring system in the lower corridor of the center with a vulcanized 2’ x 2’ rubber tile system that will be adhered to the concrete slab.

Construction will take place over summer 2018.

Completion date: By mid-July 2018.

The Genesee Portico

The existing portico will be replaced to match the other porticos in the North Village. Concrete work will take place from mid-June to mid-July 2018. Depending on delivery of the portico components, installation of the new portico will take place sometime in August-September 2018.

Completion date: Fall 2018.

Doty Tower

The existing roof and drain system at the Doty Tower is experiencing leaks and movement. As repairs are only necessary on a relatively small section of roof, the damaged section will be replaced and the drain system modified.

Construction will take place during the summer of 2018.

Completion date: Late Fall 2018.
