Museum Studies Minor

Museums today are rapidly changing into independent business units that employ a range of professionals who come into museums from the worlds of business, design, insurance, computer, communications, law, education, community activities, administrative, budget management, fundraising, marketing, advertising, communication and food services and event planning. Museums come from a range of disciplines, such as art, anthropology, history, geography, science, theatre, music and politics, all areas that are represented in Geneseo’s curriculum. For students interested in pursuing a career in the multi-faceted world of museums, it is necessary that they understand what a museum is and does so that they can see how their own area of professional interest fits within the business structure of museums.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Understand the Function and Structure of Museums: Define what a museum is and identify the various roles and responsibilities involved in the operation of a museum, from curation and education to business management and fundraising.

Apply Disciplinary Knowledge: Connect their major field of study (whether it be art, anthropology, history, geography, science, theatre, music, politics, or any other discipline) to the world of museums, recognizing the interdisciplinary nature of museum work.

Appreciate the Changing Landscape of Museums: Recognize and analyze how museums have evolved into independent business units, and the implications this has for museum professionals coming from diverse fields such as business, design, insurance, computer science, law, education, and more.

Develop Practical Skills: Acquire practical skills related to museum work, such as exhibition design, budget management, fundraising, marketing, and event planning, through coursework and experiential learning opportunities.

Prepare for a Career in Museums: Gain insights into the variety of careers available in museums and develop a clear pathway for pursuing a career in this multifaceted field, based on their personal and professional interests.
