Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, is celebrating “Keys to Action Week” December 5- 12 in honor of the 240th anniversary of the society’s founding on December 5, 1776. Since its founding, Phi Beta Kappa has established the model and standard for academic honor societies in the United States and beyond.
Geneseo’s chapter - the Alpha Delta of New York, established in 2004 - has joined the national anniversary celebration with a new web display of outstanding accomplishments of some of our PBK faculty, staff, and students. Located on the Geneseo PBK Web page, the display features a wide range of excellent work in publication and research, international philanthropy, award-winning educational service, and innovative leadership from faculty, staff and students both on-campus and beyond.
Phi Beta Kappa’s central mission is to “advocate for the importance of liberal arts and sciences education to the individual and to society.” According to Geneseo chapter President, English professor Tom Greenfield, Geneseo’s “Keys to Action” display speaks directly to that mission.
“Even this small sample of our community’s outstanding achievements conveys a clear sense that a liberal arts education – if you will, a liberal arts life – offers boundless opportunities for engaging ourselves and the world at our best moments and in our best work,” said Greenfield.
Although the national “Keys to Action Week” celebration will end December 12, the Phi Beta Kappa chapter plans to maintain the display for the remainder of the academic year.
Geneseo is the only undergraduate college in the SUNY system to be granted a PBK chapter.
