CIEE International Faculty Development Summer Seminar Award

The CIEE International Faculty Development Summer Seminar Award is intended to support the participation of one member of our faculty in a summer seminar of their choosing as offered annually by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) through its International Faculty Development Seminar (IFDS) program.  These seminars are “in-depth encounters with the people, places, and issues that shape our world.”  The seminar topics and locations vary from year to year, but all have an interdisciplinary focus, offering a contemporary, global perspective.  IFDS summer seminars range from 7 to 14 days in length and are held beginning in late May, June, or July. Details on the program and seminar offerings for the upcoming summer may be found on the CIEE IFDS web site: http://www.ciee.org/ifds/

The CIEE International Faculty Development Summer Seminar Award is supported by the Geneseo Foundation and will provide $5,000 towards the cost of the seminar fee, the application fee, international transportation, and other expenses related to the seminar.  The awardee will be responsible for expenses in excess of the $5,000 award and these additional expenses may be significant (please see below for a list of possible additional expenses and other possible support).

  1. Full-time tenured and tenure-track Geneseo faculty members are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to faculty members who have not previously participated in a CIEE IFDS seminar.

  2. Due to the rolling nature of the IFDS application and acceptance process, and possibility that a seminar may be full, we will choose one awardee and one alternate per year.  If the awardee’s application is not accepted by IFDS, or if their seminar of interest is full and no alternative seminar can be identified, the alternate will be notified that they may apply.

  3. Faculty members will be responsible for submitting their own application.  The CIEE application deadline for Summer 2017 Seminars is January, 2017.  However, once the awardee is notified of their award, they should apply as early as possible, as seminar enrollments are limited. Please see this web page for additional information: https://www.ciee.org/go-abroad/educators/international-faculty-development-seminars/get-started

  4. If an awardee’s seminar of interest is full, they may identify a suitable alternative seminar and apply for that one instead.  They should notify Anne Baldwin, Director of Sponsored Research, of the change. In the event that an awardee cannot identify an alternative seminar, please notify Anne Baldwin, so that she may inform the chosen alternate that they may go ahead and apply.

IFDS Seminar Fees and What They Include:

IFDS seminar fees range from $3,000 to $4,000 and include academic program costs, accommodation in single rooms, two meals per day (usually breakfast and lunch), two receptions, transportation to activities, entrance fees for program excursions, airport pick-up and drop-off, pre-departure support, and standard visa fees.

  1. For awardees who have never participated in a CIEE IFDS, additional funds may be available to support seminar costs through our institutional membership to CIEE.
  2. For awardees who are alumni of CIEE IFDS, the College’s institutional membership will provide for a $200 discount for seminar fees.
Additional Costs the Awardee May Be Responsible For:

The awardee will be responsible for additional costs not covered by the $5,000 award.  These may include costs associated with passports, port of entry visa fees (if applicable), visas that exceed standard group processing rates, international departure taxes, international airfare (if not fully covered by the award), ground transportation beyond the one organized airport pick-up and drop-off, most dinners, baggage charges, porterage, tips, and any incidental expenses. Please see the seminar fees page on the CIEE IFDS web site for detailed information: https://www.ciee.org/go-abroad/educators/international-faculty-development-seminars/whats-included
