Every Knight has a story, and we want to hear yours! SUNY Geneseo’s Office of Alumni Relations is collaborating with Publishing Concepts (PCI) to assemble an oral history project, Geneseo Storytellers: A Celebration of 150 Years, in celebration of the College’s Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary (1871-2021). The project will collect stories of alumni and friends and preserve them in a book that celebrates the impact of SUNY Geneseo.

By partnering with PCI, we are able to access a trained staff of real, live human beings who are excited to hear stories of your time at SUNY Geneseo. At the conclusion of the project, PCI will create a book filled with your stories. Please note that we have only shared your contact information with PCI in conjunction with this project. We have not sold your contact information or otherwise used it for outside marketing purposes.

This is also an opportunity to make it easier for you to stay connected to SUNY Geneseo. PCI will help us to collect updated contact information for those of you who may have moved and inadvertently lost touch with your alma mater.

What SUNY Geneseo story will you tell?

Do I have to buy something?

No. This project is completely funded by the alumni and friends who choose to purchase the Geneseo Storytellers book that will be produced at the end of the project. The book, which will be available in hardbound and digital formats, is offered starting at $159.98 (for the digital edition). PCI will also offer you the option to purchase other SUNY Geneseo branded merchandise such as a hat, t-shirt, sweatshirt and a travel bag. You are welcome to purchase these items, but you are not required to do so to (a) participate in the project or (b) order the Geneseo Storytellers book.

What’s next?

Soon you will receive email and postcard communications from the PCI team with instructions on how to participate. We’d like to invite you to share one of your stories with us and take part in this first-of-its-kind project to honor the experiences and voices of our alumni and friends. The PCI team will collect stories until March 2, 2022. Following editing and compilation of the data, we plan to distribute Geneseo Storytellers in fall 2022.

I received an email/postcard/phone call from a company asking for my personal information and a story about my time at SUNY Geneseo. Is this a legitimate project, or is it a scam?

It’s legit! We have partnered with PCI (also known as Publishing Concepts) to produce an oral history publication for SUNY Geneseo. PCI is a family owned business based in Dallas, TX that has published directories for educational institutions, fraternities, sororities, and military organizations across the nation for almost 100 years. This project allows SUNY Geneseo to hear about your personal experiences and to preserve your story for years to come.

What is an oral history publication?

Geneseo’s oral history publication, Geneseo Storytellers: A Celebration of 150 Years, is a collection of stories from our alumni and friends. By sharing your story, you’ll help preserve what makes SUNY Geneseo so special for future generations.

Does SUNY Geneseo benefit from this at all?

Yes, in a variety of ways:

Sharing your story helps to preserve the legacy and history of SUNY Geneseo for future generations. Updating your information allows us to effectively communicate with and engage our alumni. Purchasing the directory gives you access to the unique stories and memories of SUNY Geneseo alumni across the globe,  and helps generate donations for the College.

How can I verify/update my information and share a story?

If you have received a postcard or an email with a telephone number, call the number to speak with a dedicated representative for SUNY Geneseo’s oral history publication. The representative will verify all the information we have on file for you, make updates where needed, and ask you to share your story about your time at SUNY Geneseo. Your story will be recorded and the sound clip provided to SUNY Geneseo at the conclusion of the project. If you have received an email with an embedded link; open link, review your information and submit a story. If you did not receive a postcard or email, you may call the dedicated SUNY Geneseo update line at 1-800-769-4574.

Can I choose what information is printed in the publication?

When you call to update your information, you can tell the representative if you prefer any of your information be excluded. You can also communicate your preferences to PCI’s customer service helpdesk at 1-800-982-1590 or customerservice@publishingconcepts.com.

I updated my information but need some more time to think about what story to tell. Is that ok?

You can call back at any time to share your story.

I shared a story and the representative said I could send some photos. How do I do this?

You will receive an email with a link to upload up to two photos (black and white or color) plus captions.

If you purchased a book but do not have an email address on file, you will be sent a photo mailer to send physical photos for inclusion (note: photos will be returned if you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope).

How can I add/remove information from my story?

You will receive an email prior to publication with a link to review your transcribed story and make any edits.

If I share a story, do I have to provide a photo? If I want a photo included, do I have to share a story?

You may share as little or as much as you’d like. Some people only want to share a story, others only want to share a photo and caption

Can anyone purchase a book?

Geneseo Storytellers: A Celebration of 150 Years is available for sale only to SUNY Geneseo alumni and friends.

I ordered a book/package over the phone and would like to cancel my order. How do I do this?

When will I receive my book?

The total duration of the oral history project/publication is about 12 months. We anticipate books will be distributed in September 2022.

How do I know my information will only be used for SUNY Geneseo’s oral history publication purposes?

PCI is committed to protecting your information. The names, addresses and information provided to PCI for the oral history publication will be held confidential by PCI, except to the extent that they are utilized in, or in the preparation of, the oral history publication and except as required by court order or law. Upon completion of the project, PCI will redact personal identifiable information from any and all electronic files that were supplied to or were produced by PCI in connection with the production of SUNY Geneseo’s oral history publication.
