Area Coordinator Position Summary
The Area Coordinator is a professional position in the SUNY Geneseo Division of Student and Campus Life. As
such, the Area Coordinator is expected to fulfill their specific responsibilities in a way that demonstrates an
understanding and commitment to the articulated mission and goals of their department, the division of
Student & Campus Life, and the College. Area Coordinators are also expected to adhere to the professional
and ethical standards promulgated by the professional association with which their department is affiliated.
Area Coordinators are required to reside in the apartment provided and assigned by the College via the
Department of Residence Life. Area Coordinators must display the ability to foster diverse and inclusive
relationships, as well as a high degree of cultural humility.

Area Coordinators (AC) are live-in professional Residence Life staff members. An Area Coordinator’s primary
duty is to oversee and develop an area with multiple residence halls (two - four) as residential educators,
informed supervisors, connection builders, creative managers, and accurate record-keepers. Where
applicable, some ACs will supervise a Residence Director as well. The AC position requires flexibility of work
hours, including evening and weekend work. Area Coordinators do not have a traditional 8:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.
work schedule. As live-on professionals, ACs are considered “essential College personnel,” and must have
skills in crisis management. Each AC participates in a night and weekend duty schedule, requiring periodic
overnight monitoring of a duty phone, the ability to respond to emergency situations, and other related
residential duties. Due to the nature of this work, Area Coordinators are required to reside in the apartment
provided and assigned by the College via the Department of Residence Life.

Responsibilities include informal counseling and co-curricular education of residential students, supervision of
a staff of resident assistants, and oversight of facility needs. Successful Area Coordinators will have academic
interests and experiences that include residential education, leadership development, a commitment to
diversity, equity, and inclusion, civic and social engagement, and an understanding of the needs of students
transitioning to college, especially first-year and transfer students. Area Coordinators are educators outside
the classroom, who demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a commitment to academic excellence. By working
collaboratively with colleagues both within and beyond student life departments, Area Coordinators help
residents foster leadership skills, develop critical reasoning skills, and practice ethical decision-making.
Area Coordinators are required to hold a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree is preferred, and have
professional or paraprofessional experience in residence life or commensurate experience in student affairs. The AC will also exhibit strong written and oral communication skills.

Mission
The SUNY Geneseo Department of Residence Life, in partnership with our residents, cultivates an inclusive
living and learning environment that sparks engagement, encourages and fosters wellbeing, and inspires a
feeling of belonging for all students who live in our community.
Residence Life administers selected co-curricular educational and assessment initiatives within the residential
experience. Opportunities for student engagement and learning within the department include the living-
learning communities and residential college houses, as well as student leadership and applied learning
opportunities. Our trained Residence Life team members pursue ways to collaborate with Geneseo faculty and
staff to support our residents as they pursue their individual educational and personal goals. By providing
challenges to better themselves, demonstrating an ethic of individual care, and building a strong, vibrant
campus community, we hope to make a long-lasting positive impact on the lives of our students.

Vision
Residence Life will be recognized for creating a premier residential experience by fostering wellbeing,
promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and implementing innovative opportunities for student learning
and engagement.  Living on campus will become an integral part of our students' education experience and
will be the catalyst in the preparation for making meaning in their lives and the lives of others.

All Residence Life staff will participate in critical dialogue around DEI, anti-racism, and cultural humility. All
training, educational initiatives, and occupancy management will incorporate these commitments and staff
will espouse these values in their roles through programmatic and engagement efforts.

Commitment to Wellbeing
All Residence Life staff will work together to create a working and living environment that promotes individual
agency and advocacy for all community members and empowers them to build a well-lived life.  All training,
educational initiatives, and occupancy management will incorporate these commitments and staff will
espouse these values in their roles through programmatic and engagement efforts.

Division of Student and Campus Life
Creating a community where everyone belongs, everyone thrives, and everyone succeeds. As a community of
educators, the Division of Student and Campus Life cultivates a sense of belonging and well-being that
encourages student engagement. We work to advance diversity, equity, and belonging while supporting a
community that fosters kindness, curiosity, sustainability, and service to society.

Learning Goals
Belonging: Belonging is a feeling; an acknowledgement of security and support when there is a sense of
acceptance, inclusion, and respect for identity. All residents have a place, purpose, and voice
in the residence halls. Residents who belong are well, engaged, and empowered to use their
voice. They see themselves and their identities represented in the residence hall environment
and demonstrate cultural humility and empathy when interacting with others from
backgrounds different than their own. Residents who belong have trusted peers and
relationships with faculty and staff who support them and make them feel seen and heard.

Wellbeing: Wellbeing is a dynamic state of health and fulfillment and is a critical component of finding
one’s place in college and in the world. Residents with a strong sense of wellbeing are aware
of and active in taking care of their individual wellbeing needs (for social, emotional, mental,
academic, financial, environmental, physical, and spiritual wellness and balance). Residents
also recognize the role they play in others’ wellbeing and actively contribute to positive
community wellbeing in the residence halls.

Engagement: Engagement is care, focus, curiosity, initiative, independence, and reflection. Engaged
residents know their neighbors and recognize the value of each person in the community.
They take time to learn about others and take ownership of their own living environment
(events, spaces, and positive interpersonal relationships). Residents who are engaged
participate in activities outside of the classroom and, often, outside their major. Lastly,
engaged residents reflect on their experiences to positively impact their future.
