Public Access Defribrillation
Automated External Defibrillator Program
During a cardiac emergency, quick access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be the difference between life and death. To that end, SUNY Geneseo is committed the safety and well-being of faculty, staff, students, and visitors and has established a public access defibrillation program.
AEDs and Sudden Cardiac Arrest
According to American Heart Association’s statistics, more than 350,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States each year. Approximately 10% of people survive sudden cardiac arrests with the chance of survival increasing dramatically if the victim receives immediate CPR. AED’s are a vital link in the “chain of survival” and are the only proven way to resuscitate to a person who has had a cardiac arrest.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) occurs when the heart stops beating. An AED is used to treat victims who experience SCA. It is only applied to victims who are unconscious, without pulse, and no signs of circulation or normal breathing. The AED will analyze the heart rhythm and advise the operator if a shockable rhythm is detected. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the AED will charge to the appropriate energy level and advise the operator to deliver a shock.
