Position Summary

HIGHLIGHTS

Maintenance Assistant (Mechanic) performs semiskilled motor equipment and mechanical maintenance and repair work. The incumbent will perform routine tasks in the repair, maintenance and servicing of automotive and mechanic equipment. He or she, after learning and perfecting their craft skills, may perform journey-level activities under the supervision or after receiving detailed instructions.

DIVISION OPERATING NEEDS

The ideal candidate will have experience working at a college, be able to read, write and communicate effectively. He or she will possess a New York State Drivers License and work well in a team environment. In addition the incumbent will possess:
-Working knowledge of the methods, material, tools and equipment used for making a variety of mechanical repairs on automotive and other motor driven equipment.
-Working knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment and other motor driven equipment.
-Ability to use the tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade.
-Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
-Ability to read plans and specifications.
-Working knowledge of mechanical equipment.
-Ability to supervise others.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience in mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson or completion of an appropriate two year technical school course

This position is supervised by the Motor Equipment Mechanic, SG-12.

Supervision Exercised

This position may supervise laborer’s or ground workers.

Job Duty/ Responsibility

Function 1: Perform semiskilled maintenance and repair in motor equipment and mechanical trades

-Perform routine tasks in the repair, maintenance and servicing of automotive and mechanical equipment such as service and adjustment of hydraulic brakes
-Perform minor engine repairs as well as tune ups, including the installation of points, plugs and condensers
-Perform preventative maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment
-Make repairs and perform routine service and preventive maintenance inspections on a variety of mechanical equipment
-Utilize test equipment to diagnose and locate the cause of faulty mechanical power
