Answers to frequently asked questions about using your ID card to get into SUNY Geneseo buildings and rooms.

Student Card Access Questions

Who do I contact if I have an issue with building access?

If you have a TMA account, log into your TMA account and submit a request online. This work request system is monitored between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

You can also call our office at 585-245-5662 between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

If you need help after 4:00 p.m. or on weekends or holidays, please call University Police at 585-245-5651

I lost my ID card, what do I do?

Campus Auxiliary Services can replace a lost Geneseo ID card

If your Geneseo ID is ever lost or stolen, you should deactivate it immediately for your protection using the manage my ID card system. If you find your ID card, it can be turned back on again.

Is my Geneseo ID card working?

If you are getting no reaction from the card readers (no flashing lights or beeps), your ID card may be dead.

Campus Auxiliary Services can test it for you and if necessary replace. Visit their office in Blake A, Room 108.

How do I know when I can get into buildings?

Buildings are unlocked during operational hours. Please bookmark this page. Hours may change over breaks or as part of Geneseo's normal operations.

All residence halls have online card access readers on the exterior of the buildings. These doors are kept in a secure mode all of the time requiring a card swipe to get in. Residents that live in that building have 24 hour access. Residents from other buildings have access to any residence hall between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Off-campus students have no access to residence halls.

Can I get access to buildings after hours?

If you need after hours access to a building for research, academic work, or performance practice, this access is usually coordinated directly through your department.

In the case of student organizations, after hours access is coordinated through Campus Scheduling & Special Events.

Do I need my ID card to get into dining halls?

You need your ID for your meal plan, but dining halls are unlocked during their operational hours -- so you will be able to get in without your ID card.

Do I absolutely need to replace my Geneseo ID card?

Your Geneseo ID card functions as your key.

If you do not have a key now, and do not normally access the building after hours, then you may not need to replace your ID. It’s up to you.

How can I set up limited access for my students?

Get in touch with your department access coordinator or email us at facilitiesservices@geneseo.edu and we can put it together for you with department approval.

Where do I go to register my card?

Email us at facilitiesservices@geneseo.edu and we'd be happy to help you with that (and any other card access questions you have).

A student dropped my course and no longer should get into the building after hours, what do I do?

Oftentimes your department secretary can assist with this, but we are happy to help as well. Shoot us a message at facilitiesservices@geneseo.edu.

Can I use my ID card to access other buildings?

Yes, we can provide access permissions for other buildings (ex: maybe you walk in through South Hall on cold winter days). Sometimes this requires approval from departments in those buildings (Milne, Union, etc.).

Can I use my ID card to access residence halls?

Not without approval from Residence Life. If you email them and copy us in (facilitiesservices@geneseo.edu) we can get it set up as soon as they approve it. This works for other spaces on campus that specific departments have control over.

Who else can get into our building?

Service and security staff that previously had access with metal keys. This includes staff from Facilities Services, EHS, CAS, CIT, and University Police Department.

Who do I talk to about remaining open for a special event?

Campus Scheduling & Special Events coordinates this as one of the many services they provide supporting events on campus.

I lost my ID card, what do I do?

Campus Auxiliary Services can replace a lost ID card - but please report it lost to facilitiesservices@geneseo.edu so we can turn it off. If it turns up we are happy to turn it on again.

Can I see who got in where when?

Not unless you are University Police Department and are conducting an investigation or are Facilities Services troubleshooting an access issue. Also, this type of information is purged from the system on a regularly scheduled basis.

Does CAS charge for ID card replacement?

If you are trading in an older ID card for a newer one, CAS may not charge you. Replacing a damaged card may result in a charge. CAS reserves the right to decide when to charge for an ID card.

How do I know if my ID card will work with the system?

Newer ID cards have your name in white font. If your name on your ID card is in black font it is an old card and will not work in the system. If you hold your ID card up to a reader it should respond with a red or green light. Green means it is letting you in; red means it is not. No lights mean the card was not read.
