Position Summary

HIGHLIGHTS

This position is responsible for performing semiskilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of structures and of other items. Incumbent will be responsible for routine repetitive maintenance and repair tasks in the carpentry trade. Ability to use/operate hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and the standard measuring instruments of the carpentry trade. Incumbent will work from blueprints, drawings, oral and/or written instructions. Incumbent must have the ability to interact with building and campus community in a congenial, supportive and service oriented manner.

DIVISION OPERATING NEEDS

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a working knowledge of the rules and regulations applicable to the carpentry trade. He or she will demonstrate a working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade, be able to work from blueprints, drawings and oral or written instructions. Applicant must possess a valid New York State driver’s license, be able to understand and follow instructions and read, write and communicate verbally. Candidates must possess computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience in carpentry work under the supervision of a skilled carpenter, or completion of an appropriate two year technical school course in carpentry.

This position is supervised by the Maintenance Supervisor 2, SG-17.

Supervision Exercised

This position can supervise Maintenance Helpers, SG-06, Laborers, SG-06 and student personnel.

Function 1: Maintenance and Construction

-Use carpenter’s hand tools and power tools to assist in constructing structural woodwork and equipment such as doors, windows sashes, storm windows, screens, window guards, stairs and railings
-Installs and adjusts locks, doors closures, hinges, door checks and door hardware
-Builds and installs items such as bookcases, shelving, tables and racks using woodworking machines
-Assist journeymen in general millwork, installation of ceiling and floor tiles, furniture constructions, building structural framework, roofs and trim
-Build and construct counters, cabinets, partitions, floors and windows

-Assist in repairing structural woodwork, equipment, doors and door hardware
-Repair existing furniture such as bookcases, shelving, desks, tables, chairs, etc.

-Repair and replace wall partitions

Function 5: Support operations associated with masonry

-Builds forms associated with masonry to include, but not limited to, standard flatwork, but also stairs, footers and similar assemblies
