Leadership in Life Certificates

Personal Exploration Certificate

The Personal Exploration (Amber) Certificate incorporates workshops that offer opportunities for personal exploration and development. It has two required workshops: Personal Development Session and Amber Exploration and Personal Development Reflection.

The Personal Development Session with a GOLD Mentor may be used to complete both the Bronze and the Amber certificates and only needs to be completed one time.  Completion of these two workshops and attendance and journals for any 14 other workshops in the entire GOLD program are required to earn the Amber Certificate. Students may request any workshops that have not been used to complete a previously earned certificate be moved and used to complete the Amber Certificate (14 workshops plus the 2 required workshops).

Global Engagement Certificate

The Global Engagement (Amethyst) Certificate provides students with opportunities to prepare for studying abroad and to reflect on the experience once they return. Students who complete eight workshops will earn the Amethyst Certificate. The certificate is broken into two components: Pre-Departure and Re-Entry. It is strongly recommended that the Pre-Departure workshops be taken prior to studying abroad, however accommodations can be made. In order to earn the certificate, two Pre-Departure workshops must be completed: "BaFa BaFa" and "Going Global: Examining Intercultural Competency Models." upon return, two Re-Entry workshops must be completed: “Structured Reflection: Articulating Your Story" (four-page reflection paper required) and Transitions from Abroad: Easing the Re-Entry Process. Journal submissions will be required for each of the four required workshops and for each of the options four workshops.

Leadership Through Community Engagement Certificate

The Leadership Through Community Engagement (Diamond) Certificate is designed to help students become socially responsible citizens and prepare for lifelong engagement through active participation and reflection on volunteerism and service. The Diamond Certificate will help students involved in volunteering recognize and understand the opportunities, responsibilities, and leadership performed by volunteers for the greater good of society. Community engagement includes participation in local, state, national and global organizations/issues or working on social justice causes to make a positive difference in the world.

Students should begin this certificate by taking the first three required workshops: What Is Civic and Community Engagement, Community Mapping and Volunteerism, Engagement and Service. The last required workshop is a Reflection on Community Engagement scheduled on GREAT Day in April to permit students time to complete and reflect on their community service, engagement project, or social justice activity. Students will be encouraged to pursue issues that reflect their personal passions and interests and may be related to their careers and future lives as engaged citizens.

The Diamond Certificate will be awarded upon completion of eight workshops, including the four required workshops (What is Civic and Community Engagement, Community Mapping, Reflection on Community Engagement, and Volunteerism, Engagement and Service), completion of 40 service hours, submission of journal reflections for each workshop, including a four-page reflection paper.

Career and Professional Development Certificate

The Career and Professional Development (Emerald) Certificate has been designed to help students develop and apply lifelong career development skills to the world of work as a student employee or a full time career professional, or both. Students will learn strategies to navigate workplace issues, develop an awareness of appropriate behavior in professional settings, and prepare for the transition to a career after college. Workshops will provide opportunities to enhance personal and professional skills that are workplace expectations and help prepare students for promotions and higher level supervisory positions.

The Emerald Certificate will be awarded upon completion of eight workshops, including the four required workshops (Introduction to Interviewing Skills, Writing Resumes and Cover Letters That Get You an Interview, Networking 101: Making a Lasting Impression, and Finding an Internship) and submission of journal reflections for each workshop.

Leadership in Sustainability Certificate

The Leadership in Sustainability (Jade) Certificate is designed to help students recognize the importance of sustainability issues and to understand their responsibility as individuals and community members to encourage sustainable practices. The Jade certificate provides a practical foundation for students looking to take on leadership roles in the movement to build a more sustainable society through workshops and hands on activities created, in partnership, with the Office of Sustainability.

The Jade Certificate will be awarded upon completion of eight workshops, including the four required workshops (Following the Money: Economy and the Environment, Opportunities in Current Environmental Issues, Reflection in Current Environmental Issues, and Unpacking Portrayals of Sustainability) and submission of journal reflections for each workshop. The Jade Certificate also has a ten hour service in sustainability requirement, which can be completed through the Office of Sustainability or on the student's own time; more information on this service component is given in the Opportunities in Current Environmental Issues workshop.

Students who have completed required workshops that differ from the new required workshops posted below will need to complete a total of four required workshops, either new or previously credited workshops. The new ten-hour service component will be required to complete the certificate.

 Jade Certificate


Academic Success Certificate

The Academic Success (Onyx) Certificate has been designed to help students navigate academic life more successfully. This certificate takes into account all aspects of a student's life and how that impacts their academic success. Workshops will enable you to identify your currently scholarly skills and lead to overall academic improvement. The Onyx Certificate will serve all students who wish to improve upon their academic lifestyle and prepare you with the tools for academic success.

The certificate is comprised of four core workshops, four elective workshops and submission of journal reflections for each workshop. If you are a AOP tutor, or applying to be a AOP tutor, you can attend four additional tutor centered workshops to receive the Onyx Academic Success Certificate Plus Tutor Program Completion Award (see below for details).

The Onyx Certificate will be awarded upon completion of the four required workshops (How to Effectively Navigate Academic Texts, How to SWOT Your Way to Success, Listening Skills* and Study Skills and Test Anxiety).

Academic Success Certificate Plus Tutor Program Completion Award 

The certificate is comprised of eight core required workshops and four elective workshops. The Onyx Academic Success Certificate Plus Tutor Program Completion Award will be awarded upon completion of twelve required workshops and submission of journal reflections for each workshop. 

**Once tutors complete the 4 additional tutoring requirements (see workshops with * below), they receive an AOP jacket. Once they complete the Onyx Certificate, they receive a $.50 raise.**

Diversity and Cultural Competency Certificate

The Diversity and Cultural Competency (Opal) Certificate is designed to help students recognize that all environments are diverse, complex, challenging, constantly changing, and present a wealth of opportunity. Students will be introduced to the skill sets needed to be better able to address the challenges, as well as recognize and mine the opportunities that diversity presents.

Upon completion of the program, the student will be: more comfortable working as a member of a diverse team; better able to recognize cross-cultural barriers that can hinder communication; and less likely to make assumptions about others based on superficial traits and characteristics.

The Opal Certificate will be awarded upon completion of eight workshops, including the four required workshops (Cross-Cultural Problem Solving, Developing Inter-Group Relationships, Identity Expression, and Taking the Next Steps), and submission of journal reflections for each workshop.
