Position Summary

HIGHLIGHTS
The incumbent performs a variety of routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort, to assist in maintaining, constructing and repairing buildings, roads, offices, other structures, furniture, facilities, and campus landscape associated with grounds tasks.

Incumbent will perform routine activities such as using a forklift, pallet jacks, power tools, dollies and hand trucks, mowers, weed eaters, and tractors. May frequently work outdoors in inclement weather. Will use hand tools and operate motor driven equipment, and generally performs activities as part of a work crew to perform upkeep for the campus grounds and landscaping. May need to move heavy supplies, equipment and furniture.

Position to serve in the Grounds Department.

Preferred Qualifications

DIVISION OPERATING NEEDS
Ability to perform the physical functions of the position, including medium to heavy labor and lifting (a minimum of 50 pounds). Must be able to understand and follow instructions, and read, write and communicate verbally. Must provide a record of dependability and past work performance, including satisfactory time and attendance record.

Ability to work shifts and weekends, based on a 40-hour work week, plus scheduled and unscheduled overtime when necessary.

Possess or work to achieve initial certification within a year in pesticide application (ornamental and turf) and continue to work progressively to the point of becoming a fully certified applicator in this category.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no education or experience qualifications for this class. Laborers must be physically able to perform the duties assigned. Possession of a valid New York State drivers license may be required.

Supervision Received

This position will be supervised by Maintenance Assistants, SG-09 and/or Senior Grounds Workers, SG-09.

Immediate supervisor: Gerry Turybury, Lynn Thompson, or Jason Templeton

Supervision Exercised

No formal supervision provided by this position, however, may lead work crews in the completion of an assignment.

Function 1: Maintains grounds, roadways and trails.

-Clears sites, prepares them for planting, and plants seeds, trees, shrubbery and flowers.
-Cleans grounds, roadways and structures by sweeping, raking, shoveling, mowing, and removing by hand debris, leaves, branches, snow, ice, trash, etc.
-Maintains areas by cutting grass, pruning plants, cutting and removing dead branches and trees, placing mulching materials and stone, and fertilizing and watering plants and grass.
-Maintains athletic fields by cutting and raking grass, replacing sod in damaged areas, and lining and preparing fields.
-Installs and maintains fences, guide rails, signs, walkways and snow fencing.
-Digs and excavates ditches, paths, and water and steam lines.

Function 2: Operation and maintenance of equipment.

-Operates lawnmowers and plows to maintain grounds, parking lots and walkways.
-Operates tractors and related equipment for planting.
-Mounts and dismounts major assemblies such as plows and salt spreaders.
-Maintains vehicles and equipment by cleaning, scraping off rust and accretions, and replacing simple parts, such as wipers, tires and batteries.

-Cleans, lubricates and maintains machinery, equipment, gear, cables and tools.
-Lifts and places equipment, ladders and scaffolds.
-Mixes and applies concrete, mortar, paving materials, paints and other substances.
-Replaces fuses, light bulbs, washers, faucets and shelves.
-Installs and repairs fences and picnic benches.
-Cleans work areas and cleans and lubricates mechanical, electrical and power plant equipment.
-Assists in operating heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment.
-May operate a hand truck or forklift.
