Annie Renaud ’19, from Glastonbury, CT, has won a 2019–20 U.S Student Fulbright award for Russia, where she will work as an English Teaching Assistant at a university or post-secondary institution. The award is the culmination of Renaud’s five-year journey with mentor Cynthia Klima, an associate professor of German at Geneseo.

Luke Bamburoski ’19, a Brockport, NY, native, was one of the first applicants to Geneseo’s interdisciplinary neuroscience major. Bamburoski’s affinity for both research and service has motivated him to pursue educational experiences that will help him accelerate the development of medical therapies from the lab bench to the patient’s bedside.

Lorenzo Rodriguez ’19, from Jamestown, NY, has won a U.S. Student Fulbright Research Grant for Bulgaria for 2019–20. An anthropology major with an emphasis in sociomedical science, he will research the ways in which funding and staffing challenges within health care facilities impact local communities.

SUNY Geneseo’s McNair Scholars Program, a chapter of the nationally supported Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, will graduate its first cohort in May. Geneseo’s program launched in Summer 2018 with 12 rising juniors and 14 rising seniors. To date, eight of this year’s graduating seniors and one junior have accepted offers from graduate schools and other scholarly programs.

Paleontologist Matthew Lamanna, Ph.D., the principal dinosaur researcher at Carnegie Museum of Natural History, will deliver the sixteenth annual American Rock Salt Lecture in Geology on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Newton Hall Room 202. Lamanna’s talk, “The Origin of Modern Birds: New Cretaceous Fossil Discoveries from China and Antarctica,” is free and open to the public.

Geneseo alumna Janine Rossi ’18 and Kelsey Kwandrans ’19 have won 2019–20 U.S. Student Fulbright awards to Uruguay and Spain respectively. Rossi and Kwandrans become the 28th and 29th Geneseo student or alumni to win a U.S. Student Fulbright award.

Tshering Sherpa ’21 has been named a Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholar for 2019–20. She will travel to Cadiz, Spain, for six weeks to study Spanish at the Centro Superior de Lenguas Modernas (CSLM), a language school at the Universidad de Cádiz.

​​​​​​​The College community will celebrate Earth Week, April 15–25, with speakers, a Garden Fest, demonstrations, campus clean-ups, art installations, and other activities highlighting worldwide environmental issues and ways individuals can make a difference.

Geneseo’s master's commencement will feature a keynote by Laurence T. Spring ’92, superintendent of the Schenectady City School District. The bachelor's commencement keynote speaker is Jeri Muoio ’69, Ph.D., former mayor of West Palm Beach, FL. The graduate ceremony is Friday, May 10, followed by two ceremonies that make up the bachelor's commencement on Saturday, May 18.

Students are preparing their projects for presentation during GREAT Day on April 17 (Geneseo Recognizing Excellence, Achievement & Talent). This is the 13th year of the annual event, a college-wide symposium celebrating the creative and scholarly endeavors of Geneseo students.

As the Eddie Lee ’76 First Generation Ambassador, Pema Sherpa '19 spent the fall semester in her native Nepal, shadowing pediatric doctors to learn about medicine and the challenges of providing health care in underserved areas. She also collaborated with the doctors to provide no-cost eye exams to more than 700 children and prescription eye glasses to 80 students who needed them.

Imasha Silva ’19 chose to come to Geneseo to study from her home in Sri Lanka because it was her dream to earn a U.S. college education, and her brother, Malan Silva ’09, had such a positive experience pursuing his education here.

Catherine Shields '19 has won a U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship. The Grandview Heights, NY, native will spend the summer in Baku, Azerbaijan, at the Azerbaijani University of Languages for an intensive eight-week course of university-level Turkish.

Katelyn Brooks ’19, from Gates, NY, a musical theatre and communications double major, understands what a life in theatre will take. Eleven Geneseo productions, years of voice and dance lessons, and an active role in the Geneseo Chamber Singers have burnished her musical theatre credentials, and she’s poised to launch into the theatre life.

The State University of New York at Geneseo has invited 92 students into the College’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa this spring, prompted by their recent election by the College’s faculty. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most widely known academic honor society.

SUNY Geneseo is on a list of the nation’s top public colleges, ranking 65th out of 505 four-year public institutions in the country and 19th among the 73 eastern region colleges on the survey, compiled by <em>Business First</em>, a Buffalo-based publication. The 2019 survey results were based on academic excellence, affordability, diversity, and economic strength.

Geneseo’s Career Design Center has earned a Diversity and Inclusion Focus award from the SUNY Career Development Organization (CDO) for its Encore Career Closet, a service that assists students who need professional attire for career-related occasions. Winners will be honored at the annual SUNY CDO conference June 12–14 in Java Center, NY.

The SUNY Geneseo Department of Music’s Musical Theatre Program’s latest production, Pippin, runs next week, April 10–13, at 7:30 p.m., with an additional matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. All performances are in the Alice Austin Theater on Geneseo’s campus.

SUNY Geneseo has named Julie L. Buehler ‘89, executive consultant at Mitrano and Associates, LLC, as the College’s new vice president for Finance and Administration. Buehler will begin as VPFA on July 25.

In celebration of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, the Buildings and Grounds Advisory Committee will join with Facilities Services and the Office of Sustainability to revive a college tradition — campus beautification. The effort kicks off with a Spruce Up Day, with plans for an Adopt-a-Garden program. The first Spruce Up Day begins April 22 at 3 p.m.

Austin Ainsworth ’19, from Honeoye Falls, NY, is a skilled xylophone player. He's also a late-night Dungeons & Dragons gamer, a former Pride Alliance officer, a budding recreational poet, and a genetics researcher — and he’s all those things because he chose to attend SUNY Geneseo.

Geneseo’s Department of Political Science and International Relations will present a special screening of the documentary “Who Speaks for Nature?" by Larry Engel on Friday, March 29, at 4:30 p.m. at the Riviera Theater in Geneseo. The documentary is based on a book co-authored by Geneseo Associate Professor Karleen West.

SUNY Geneseo is ranked No. 13 among medium-sized schools on the Peace Corps’ 2019 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities list. Currently, 22 Geneseo alumni are volunteering with the worldwide program.

SUNY Geneseo’s Department of Student Health and Counseling was recently designated as a Medical Home by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Centers (AAAHC). Of the nearly 4,000 higher education institutions in the U.S., only 17 have achieved Medical Home accreditation, considered by the AAAHC as the highest achievement for primary care.

SUNY Geneseo’s Department of Music will host a “unity-community sing” of Ludwig van Beethoven’s <iSymphony No. 9i/> on Sunday, May 5, in Wadsworth Auditorium. Volunteer singers will join the Geneseo Symphony Orchestra, the Festival Singers, Geneseo’s town/gown choir, and professional soloists.
