Social Psychology

Please provide a brief description of your research interests

My research focuses on understanding the causes and consequences of the marginalization of women particularly in the domains of sexual assault and the underrepresentation of women in positions of leadership and STEM fields. In particular, I focus on subtle forms of sexism and socio-cultural factors that shape perceptions of women in these domains, and how these perceptions impact women’s behavior, self-esteem, and self-perceptions.

Are you looking for student research assistants for the upcoming semester?

Yes, 2-3 students

What semester are you looking for?

Spring 2023, Fall 2023, Spring 2024

What years do you prefer students to be?

First year, sophomore, junior

In what aspects are student research assistants involved in your lab?

Students in my lab are involved in every step of the process-from initial conception of an idea, the designing of the study, collection/analysis, and the subsequent presentation of our work.

What skills are you looking for in student research assistants?

It is helpful if a student has satisfactorily completed at least PSYC250 or PSYC251 prior to applying to my lab to demonstrate a foundational understanding of research methodology. Besides that, I'm looking for a student interested to learn about, and gain experience with, all aspects of the research process that can ideally commit to the lab over multiple semesters. Training takes a lot of time, and I invest a lot in my students in order to ensure they get an impactful experience in conducting research from the conception of an idea to the analysis and dissemination of our results - this takes more time than one semester.

I am looking for students with a passion for exploring research with an eye toward social justice. I do require my students to reserve time to actively work on assigned research tasks, to be reliable in meeting deadlines and running participants, and maintain professionalism in interacting with participants.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Because I am at the beginning stages of my professional career, I am ideally looking for students who can commit to multiple semesters in my lab at 2-3 credits each semester. I am hoping to create a lab in which more senior members are given leadership roles and assist in the training of newer students. That doesn't mean I will automatically turn away a senior, though! If you have a passion for social psychology and research, please do not hesitate to contact me! I do my recruitment for research assistants in advance of the start of the semester. My recruitment for spring RAs, for instance, will be conducted at the end of the fall semester, so reaching out with interest after mid-terms to communicate your interest in joining us the following semester is a good time to establish contact and get information on any information sessions I may be hosting.
