Move-Out Information
Students departing during the semester (due to leave of absence, withdraw, etc.) or between the semesters can check out using the Express Check-Out system. Each hall has an Express Check-Out box near the RA service desk with Express Check-Out envelopes.
To avoid an improper check-out fee and possible lock change fees, students wishing to check out must complete this envelope, put their key inside, and drop it into the Express Check-Out box. Students in card access only halls (Erie, Monroe, Seneca) must still complete the Express Check-Out slip and drop it into the Express Check-Out box to complete a check-out properly.
May 2024 Closing
Closing for all students not graduating or volunteering on campus for Commencement is Friday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. Final Closing for all students who do not have a completed and paid for summer housing contract is 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 19.
Residence halls will close for all students not participating in Commencement on May 17 at 10:00 a.m. Residents must inform Residence Life of their plans using the move-out form.
All residents must vacate their rooms within 24 hours of the completion of their last final exam or by May 17 (whichever comes first). Seniors participating in Commencement activities, and residents identified by the Office of Scheduling, Events, and Conference Services as those who will be volunteering at Commencement, must depart by 10:00 a.m. on May 19.
There are two check-out options for residents: Express Check-Out (flexible) and Standard Check-Out (scheduled).
Express Check-Out
Express Check-Out is available 24/7 at the RA Service Desk. Residents should locate the Express Check-Out box, complete the Express Check-Out envelope and insert their key, and put it in the Express Check-Out box.
Standard Check-Out
Standard Check-Out is completed by making an appointment with the AC/RD during business hours. Once completed, residents must vacate the residence hall and may not go back to their room. At the Standard Check-Out, residents give the key to the AC/RD and sign a check-out document.
Damage Billing
Students are responsible for the condition of the entire room, not just the half where their bed is located. The condition of the room is based on any edits made to the Room Condition Report at check-in. Room Condition Reports can be viewed in Symplicity. Communication between roommate/suitemates is highly encouraged if there are concerns or questions. Students can contact their AC/RD by email, copying their roommate/suitemates to take responsibility for particular damages to avoid charges being divided by all room/suite occupants.
Individual charges are a result of damages or excessive cleaning post-departure. Room furniture should be intact, and rooms should be broom-swept clean, empty of personal belongings, and free of damages to college property to avoid individual charges.
In addition to individual charges, residents may be responsible for community damage charges, which are a result of damages, vandalism, or excessive cleaning for the common areas of suites, townhouses, residence hall floors, and/or residence hall buildings.
Other Closing Charges
Other charges may be billed under the label "damage billing."
- Improper Check-Out (not following the proper process to check out)
- Improper Room Change
- Personal Item Removal Fees
- Lock Change Fees (for non-returned keys or keys left in incorrect locations that our staff was unable to find)
A list of common damage billing and their costs can be found on the damage billing page.
Damage billing invoices will be sent to each student's Geneseo email in June. There are strict appeal deadlines. Students should continue to check their email periodically during the summer. Appeals will not be accepted past the deadline.
Lock Change Fee Increase
The lock change fee increases to $150.00 after the last day of classes. Students not in possession of their room key should report that to their AC/RD prior to the last day of classes to avoid being billed at the “end of year” rate.
