Position Summary

HIGHLIGHTS

The incumbent will operate a variety of equipment and motor vehicles used in construction; maintenance and repair activities; care and condition of campus grounds, gardens, athletics fields, walkways, parking lots and roads. Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of constructing and repairing buildings, roads, facilities, grounds and other structures.

DIVISION OPERATING NEEDS

Applicants must have working knowledge of the operation of a variety of self-propelled equipment and basic knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the assigned equipment. Possess the ability to climb, stoop, and perform medium to heavy labor and lifting (minimum of 50 pounds). Possess or work to achieve initial certification within a year in pesticide application (ornamental and turf) and continue to work progressively to the point of becoming a fully certified applicator in this category. Must be able to understand and follow instructions read, write and communicate verbally. Applicant must provide a record of dependability and past work performance. Candidate must possess computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in the operation of equipment noted as appropriate for this class and the possession of a valid New York State drivers license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.

Job Duty/ Responsibility

Function 1: Operates and maintains self-propelled equipment and motorized machinery in the construction, repair and maintenance of campus grounds, roadways and parking lots and campus structures and buildings.

-Operates one or more of the following on roadways, parking lots, grounds construction and repair, and maintenance projects: Road graders, six-ton brush cutters, windrow-type loaders, large front end loaders, truck mounted zone stripers, bituminous pavers, pavement breakers, rollers (ten tons and over), skid steer, box plow, forklift, backhoe, etc.
-Performs tasks involving physical labor for highway and heavy construction projects using equipment and machinery to move mulch, repair potholes, parking lot stripping, operate front end loaders to load gravel onto trucks, pack dumpsters, turn soil for compost for CAS, snow removal for campus grounds – operates heavy dump trucks with plow, wing and spreader attachments to simultaneously plow snow and control ice, transport and remove trees/shrubs/plants, assist with renovations in parking lots by tearing up concrete and black top, transport paving material to paving operations.
-Picks up and delivers supplies and equipment.
-Loads and unloads heavy equipment, supplies, and furniture from trucks by physically lifting items or operating a hand truck or forklift.
-Moves items to and from storerooms and/or warehouses and maintain storage areas. (List of tasks utilizing equipment and machinery is not all inclusive.)
-Operates self-propelled sweepers to clean roads of dirt and debris.

Job Duty/ Responsibility

Function 2: Assists skilled and semi-skilled trades workers in grounds and garage by performing routine maintenance and repairs to insure safe and efficient operations.

-Pumps gas and adds or drains water and/or antifreeze to radiator, oil to crankcase, air to tires and hydraulic fluid to reservoirs.
-Change tires on machines and vehicles as necessary. Replace burned-out or broken lamp bulbs.
-Change oil and spark plugs.
-Change oil, fuel, air and hydraulic filters.
-Checks fluid levels, tire pressure, safety devices and control mechanisms of machines prior to operation.
-Monitors gauges and fluid levels of machines during operations.
-Cleans, lubricates, and maintains machinery equipment, gears, cables, and tools.
-Sharpens blades.
-Mounts and dismounts major assemblies, such as plows and salt spreaders, and assist mechanics in removing and installing heaving items.
-Cleans and maintains vehicles and equipment.
-Performs these operations utilizing hand tools (wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, and other assorted tools), grease guns, pneumatic air guns, etc.

Function 3: Assists grounds crew with grounds care, maintenance and pesticide application.

-Operates lawn mowers and plows to maintain grounds, parking lots, and walkways.
-Operates tractors and related equipment to plant and care for campus grounds, roadways, parking lots, and athletic fields.
-Operates tractors and trucks to pick up supplies and collect trash.
-Clears sites, prepares them for planting, and plants seeds, trees, shrubbery and flowers.
-Cleans grounds, roadways, and structures by sweeping, raking, shoveling, mowing, and removing by hand debris, leaves, branches, snow, ice, trash, etc.
-Maintains sideways and walkways.
-Maintains areas by cutting grass, pruning plants, cutting and removing dead branches and trees, placing mulching materials and stone, and fertilizing and watering plants and grass.
-Maintains athletic fields by cutting and raking grass, replacing sod in damaged areas, and lining and preparing fields.
-Maintains turf areas.
-Installs and maintains fences, guide rails, signs, walkways, and snow fencing.
-Mixes and applies pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
-Operates boom sprayer and hydra seeder.

Function 4: Assists with specials projects and emergency projects as assigned.

-Answers simple questions such as time and place of events, directions and general information about facilities and usage.
-Sets up and breaks down equipment for special events. Lifts and places equipment, ladders and scaffolds.
-Removes materials preparatory to repair and construction by using jackhammers, sanders, paint strippers and other hand tools and equipment.
-Controls traffic at highway for maintenance projects.
-Patrols areas to determine damage, traffic, navigational hazards, vandalism and condition, removes obstructions and debris, makes simple repairs and reports needs for repairs.
-Assists mason with mixes and applies concrete, mortar, paving materials paints and other substances.
-Makes minor repairs to buildings and structures, such as unplugging drains, painting walls, cutting sheet metal and soldering, fixing and replacing hinges and locks, and installing repairing fences and picnic benches and rearranging metal shelving.
-Assists with emergency projects such water main breaks by digging and excavating Digs and excavates ditches, paths, and water.
-Assists with hardscaping projects and other projects as assigned.
