SUNY Geneseo has received a SUNY's PRODiG initiative grant to help support four newly hired faculty members at Geneseo. The initiative was launched in March by Gov. Cuomo to increase the representation of historically underrepresented faculty and women faculty of all races in STEM fields throughout SUNY.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees has appointed Harry Howe, a professor of accounting in SUNY Geneseo's School of Business, to a distinguished teaching professorship. The distinguished rank recognizes and honors the superior mastery of teaching, outstanding service to students and commitment to their ongoing intellectual growth.

The Department of Anthropology at SUNY Geneseo is introducing a new major for undergraduate students interested in the social determinants of disease and health. The sociomedical sciences major examines the correlation between trends in health and its social causes, including social inequality and structural inequities.

SUNY Geneseo student Karilyn Nieves ’20 was one of 42 students in SUNY’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) to receive the inaugural Norman R. McConney Jr. Award for Student Excellence. The award recognizes outstanding EOP students for their academic achievements.

The Ephemeral Arts Festival allows students and faculty to make and appreciate art made entirely from nature, from arrangements created with fallen red and orange leaves of fall to moss-covered sticks transformed into sculpture. Each creation is preserved with a photograph.

Geneseo alumni college and university presidents returned to campus during Homecoming & Family Weekend to participate in a breakfast panel discussion on careers.

Student voting on the SUNY Geneseo campus rose by almost 600 percent in last year’s election, according to a report by the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE). The number of Geneseo students who voted increased from 335 in 2014 to 1,994 (or from 6.3 to 37.5 percent of students) in 2018.

Geneseo is a member of the NY Higher Education Large Scale Renewable Energy consortium of 20 public and private higher education institutions for the purchase of large-scale aggregated renewable energy. The consortium represents one of the state’s largest aggregated purchases of renewable energy to date.

SUNY Geneseo has been named to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s list of the Top 400 Best College Values for 2019, ranking 96th on the comprehensive list of the nation's public and private colleges.

Professor of psychology Steven Kirsh combined two of his passions, zombies and psychology, for his latest book: Parenting in the Zombie Apocalypse: The Psychology of Raising Children in a Time of Horror (McFarland, 2019).

SUNY Geneseo appears in the 2020 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges. Inclusion in the guide as a “best and most interesting” college is based on the quality of academic offerings and includes students’ social and quality-of-life ratings.

The SUNY Geneseo Alumni Association (SGAA) recognized three individuals — John Lombardo ’74, Chad Salitan ’09, and former athletic director Marilyn Moore — for their professional achievements at the college’s annual alumni reunion, a two-day weekend event that drew more than 700 alumni and friends to Geneseo on June 7 and 8. 

While studying abroad in the Netherlands International relations major Katherine Andersen ‘19 saw an exhibit at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum museum on the Dutch trade industry during the 18th century. It inspired her to research how women’s fashion evolved with the growing international trade in textiles.

The Advancing Cultural Competency Certificate (ACCC) successfully completed its pilot initiative and will launch campus-wide in Fall 2019 as an opt-in program open to all SUNY Geneseo and Campus Auxiliary Services employees.

SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles recently assumed the role of chair of the American Council on Education’s (ACE) Council of Fellows, an elected position.

SUNY Geneseo is among 123 campuses in the country — only 10 of which are in NYS — recently designated a “Voter Friendly Campus.” The goal of the Voter Friendly Campus designation program is to bolster efforts that help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process and develop a culture of democratic engagement on campus. This year’s efforts also resulted in the registration of over 1,000 Geneseo students.

Two student teams from SUNY Geneseo’s VentureWorks entrepreneurship program secured three awards in the finals of the tenth annual New York State Business Plan Competition (NYBPC) April 29 at The Armory at Sage in Albany. 

Stephen Mott ’18 from Nesconset, NY, who graduated in December, is a thoughtful, plan-ahead kind of person whose conversation already has the careful cadences of the lawyer he intends to be. So it comes as a surprise to learn he also plays the fast-paced, in-your-face sport of hockey.

Geneseo alumna Janine Rossi ’18 and Kelsey Kwandrans ’19 have won 2019–20 U.S. Student Fulbright awards to Uruguay and Spain respectively. Rossi and Kwandrans become the 28th and 29th Geneseo student or alumni to win a U.S. Student Fulbright award.

Tshering Sherpa ’21 has been named a Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholar for 2019–20. She will travel to Cadiz, Spain, for six weeks to study Spanish at the Centro Superior de Lenguas Modernas (CSLM), a language school at the Universidad de Cádiz.

As the Eddie Lee ’76 First Generation Ambassador, Pema Sherpa '19 spent the fall semester in her native Nepal, shadowing pediatric doctors to learn about medicine and the challenges of providing health care in underserved areas. She also collaborated with the doctors to provide no-cost eye exams to more than 700 children and prescription eye glasses to 80 students who needed them.

Imasha Silva ’19 chose to come to Geneseo to study from her home in Sri Lanka because it was her dream to earn a U.S. college education, and her brother, Malan Silva ’09, had such a positive experience pursuing his education here.

Katelyn Brooks ’19, from Gates, NY, a musical theatre and communications double major, understands what a life in theatre will take. Eleven Geneseo productions, years of voice and dance lessons, and an active role in the Geneseo Chamber Singers have burnished her musical theatre credentials, and she’s poised to launch into the theatre life.

SUNY Geneseo is on a list of the nation’s top public colleges, ranking 65th out of 505 four-year public institutions in the country and 19th among the 73 eastern region colleges on the survey, compiled by <em>Business First</em>, a Buffalo-based publication. The 2019 survey results were based on academic excellence, affordability, diversity, and economic strength.

Austin Ainsworth ’19, from Honeoye Falls, NY, is a skilled xylophone player. He's also a late-night Dungeons & Dragons gamer, a former Pride Alliance officer, a budding recreational poet, and a genetics researcher — and he’s all those things because he chose to attend SUNY Geneseo.
