November 2021

• Beth Cholette, PhD, assistant director of counseling services, shared SUNY Geneseo's Red Folder, a mental health resource guide that is provided to employees to help students in need, with The Chronicle of Higher Education. The Chronicle featured the Red Folder in a "Spotlight" feature in its latest guide Building Students' Resilience. The Red Folder is an initiative of Geneseo's Mental Health Advisory Committee. It is provided to all new employees and is also available in an online format.
   
• Director of Admissions Christie Smith was selected to be one of 10 SUNY faculty and staff to be named a fellow of SUNY’s 2022 Hispanic Leadership Institute. The story was reported in The Daily News.

• Associate professor of history Jordan Kleiman's work on the Love Canal was quoted for historical context and relevance to the polluted Gowanus Canal in an article published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
   
• A guest opinion article by Associate Professor Karleen West, political science and international relations, appeared on Syracuse.com, the website for the Syracuse Post Standard. The commentary calls for TIAA to divest from fossil fuels.
   
•  Michael Leroy Oberg, distinguished professor of history, was a featured guest on WXXI's Connections with Evan Dawson. The show was inspired by Oberg's Washington Post commentary on the whitewashing of American History at the expense of Native American's contributions to the nation.

April 2021

• Michael Leroy Oberg, distinguished professor of history, contributed a guest essay to the "Made in History" column in The Washington Post. Oberg's essay argues that former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum and others whitewash Native Americans out of American history.
   
• Mackenzie Gerringer, assistant professor of biology, was featured in a Live Science article, "Anglerfish are stranger than science fiction." Gerringer, who joined the faculty in 2019, established a deep-sea physiology and ecology lab at the College.

• Associate Professor Karleen West, political science and international relations, appeared on Slate's The Gist podcast. She spoke with Mike Pesca about her commentary in the Syracuse Post Standard about her mother's participation in the January 6 Capitol riot.
   

• Associate Professor Lytton Smith, director of the Center for Integrative Learning, appeared with the director of preservation at Landmark Society of Western NY and other guests on WXXI's Connections with Evan Dawson to discuss building a "pipeline" to the traditional trades.

• The Home Away From Home Respite Center program and its coordinator Sharon Leary were featured in a story on Spectrum News about the program's work with individuals dealing with memory-related illnesses.
   
• The Livingston County News  shared SUNY Police Chiefs Award announcement regarding Geneseo's UPD Officer Christopher LoPiano's 2020 Professional Service Award.

• Michael Taberski, VP for Student and Campus Life, was interviewed for a 13-WHAM news story about Spring 2021 semester plans.
• Garth Freeman, director of Student Volunteerism and Community Engagement, was featured in a Livingston County News story that reported on the efforts of his office, the student organization Food Security Advocates, and SUNY Geneseo students who volunteered to distribute food in partnership with Foodlink and the Geneseo Groveland Emergency Food Pantry. The food distribution event was expected to aid 250-300 area families and students who are experiencing food insecurity.

• SUNY distinguished professor of history Michael Leroy Oberg provided context on a story about a New York State historical marker in Fairport, NY. The story, "Fairport says farewell to a 'first white child' memorial," originally appeared in City News.
   
• SUNY distinguished professor of history Michael Leroy Oberg's blog post, "Confronting Colonialism and Genocide in Father Serra’s Town," was cited in the article "How To Remove A Statue Rather Than Topple It," by Bill Fulton and published on Medium. The same article was republished on Rice University's Kinder Institute for Urban Research's blog, "Urban Edge." Fulton is the director of the institute.
   
• Professor and chair of political science and international relations Jeffrey Koch was interviewed by WXXI's James Brown for a story on this election year's "floater voters." The interview appeared on WXXI radio and in print in Rochester's City News.

• President Denise Battles’ appointment as co-chair of the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council (FLREDC) was featured in a WXXI news article.
• Justin Behrend, professor and chair of the Department of History, was featured in a Perspectives on History article on the "Marketing the History Major" session at the American Historical Association's (AHA) annual meeting in January. Behrend and other members of the panel discussed the challenges and tactics for successful recruiting and retention of college history students.
   
• Pouya Seifzadeh, assistant professor of strategy in the School of Business, co-authored an article in a Rochester Business Journal article "The future of the global economy: Local-global or global-local?" The article's other coauthor is David Kunsch, an associate professor of strategy at St. John Fisher College.

• Professor Harry Howe, School of Business, was featured in a Rochester Business Journal article on the annual World of Accounting event that is organized by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. Howe has served on the World of Accounting organizing committee for 20 years. (The article is accessible online via a subscription only.)
   
• Adjunct Lecturer Rocío Vallejo-Alegre, Department of Languages and Literatures, was featured in Rochester's El Mensajero's article about the town-gown collaboration Project Together. Together pairs SUNY Geneseo students with Spanish-speaking families in the community who want to learn or improve their English. Geneseo students also serve as tutors for the families' K–12 students.

• Amanda Roth, assistant professor of philosophy and women’s studies, was featured in a Rochester Business Journal article on the importance of the arts and humanities in STEM fields. Roth was part of a panel discussion on the topic hosted by Monroe Community College's Institute for Humanities.
• Laurie Fox ‘90, the assistant director and manager for educational technology in CIT, was featured in an article, “4 Essentials for Learning Space Redesign,” for Campus Technology. Fox works to establish best practices and recommends surveying faculty and strategic planning when updating learning spaces on a budget. Fox also manages Geneseo’s “Educational Technology Chat” blog.
• Interim VP for Enrollment Management Kim Harvey was featured in a 13-WHAM news report on how students and parents can best navigate the college admissions process in light of the national admissions scandal.

• Laura Swanson, LCSW, a Student Health & Counseling staff counselor, lent her expertise to an article, “Students' mental health needs are increasing,” in Rochester’s City Newspaper. 
   
• Assistant professor of communication Sarah Brookes’ recent research, “I didn’t see that coming: Spoilers, fan theories, and their influence on enjoyment and parasocial breakup distress during a series finale,” published in Psychology of Popular Media Culture, was featured in a Forbes article about Game of Thrones fan theories.
   
• Assistant professor of history Yvonne Seale shared her expertise with Vox readers, where she explained the historical significance of Notre Dame and it’s centrality to Parisian life in her article, “Notre Dame has always been the people’s cathedral.” Seale's article had a reach of 11 million readers.
   
• A commentary by Michael Leroy Oberg, Distinguished Professor of History, “20 Years after Columbine: ‘Guns are the problem. Guns Need to Go.”, was published in the Syracuse Post Standard.
   
• The appointment of Julie Buehler '89 as Geneseo's new vice president of finance and administration was featured in an article by the Rochester Business Journal. (The article is accessible via a subscription only.)

In the article, Seifzadeh debates with David Kunsch, an associate professor of strategy at St. John Fisher College, about Pacific Gas & Electric's intent to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy following months of ongoing wildfires in California. • University Police Chief Thomas Kilcullen was featured in a Livingston County News story that highlights his career at SUNY Geneseo and his semi-finalist status in the national “Campus Safety Director of the Year Award.”
   
• Interim VP for Enrollment Management Kim Harvey was featured in a 13-WHAM news report on SUNY admissions and the current demographic challenges that face all NYS colleges. (A correction to the story: Geneseo's acceptance rate was 37 percent over a decade ago, in 2008, not 2015; in 2016 it was 65 percent).
   
• On Feb. 15, Michael Leroy Oberg, Distinguished Professor of History, was the featured guest on WXXI's Connections With Evan Dawson on Oberg's local history workshop and his efforts to create a Center for Local Municipal History.

• Jason Ozubko, assistant professor of psychology, is one of several neuroscientists and psychologists featured in Gizmodo’s “Giz Asks” column on “Why Do We Forget.” Gizmodo is part of Gawker Media; the article has a reach of 13 million readers. 
   
• Robert Bonfiglio, vice president of Student and Campus Life, contributed to a Livingston County News story regarding how the proposed legalization of marijuana in New York State might affect SUNY campuses.
   
• Jennifer Katz, professor of psychology, was quoted in a story about the New York legislature's passage of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act published in the Livingston County News.
   
• Research on curricular change that was conducted by Suann Yang, assistant professor of biology, was recently published as an open-access article in PLOS ONE. The science news website Science Daily picked up and posted Geneseo's press release on Yang's research; it garnered over 4.1 million views. It was also picked up by Phys.Org, where it earned 3 million views and Inside Higher Ed's post reached 1 million readers. Science Codex and other science news aggregators also shared the story.
   
• On Jan. 4, Joseph Cope, professor of history and interim associate provost for student success, appeared on WXXI Connections with Evan Dawson to discuss grade inflation in secondary and higher education. The show is available as a podcast.

December 2018

• President Denise Battles' letter to the editor of the Livingston County Newspaper confirms the College's and village's shared commitment to inclusion.
   
• Associate professor of history, Jordan Kleiman’s "Love Canal: A Brief History," was cited in an article on the 40th anniversary of the Love Canal environmental disaster in Green Living magazine.

November 2018

• Assistant Professor Nicholas Warner, Department of Geological Sciences, was featured in numerous news outlets due to his work with NASA’s InSight mission to Mars. Warner’s work with InSight was featured on the front page of Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle. He was also interviewed for WXXI’s Morning Edition, and via Skype from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena for 13WHAM-TV.
   
• Dori Farthing, associate professor and chair of geological sciences, was interviewed by 13WHAM-TV during the Mars landing party that featured a live stream of the landing via NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Spectrum News also interviewed Farthing about the landing and Geneseo’s involvement.
   
• WXXI Connections with Evan Dawson aired a rebroadcast of a July show about the Trump administration’s immigration policies. A guest on the show was Akil Aljaysh, adjunct lecturer of Arabic in the Department of Languages and Literatures, who is from Iraq and also serves as a refugee cases manager at Catholic Family Center.
   
• Bill Cook, Distinguished Teaching Professor and emeritus professor of history at SUNY Geneseo has penned a commentary for the Livingston County News. His latest opinion piece is titled, “Lessons: It’s Time to Learn from Our Mistakes.”

October 2018

• Professor Maria Helena Lima of Geneseo’s Department of English was quoted in Pipe Dream, the SUNY Binghamton student newspaper. Lima attended a recent University Faculty Senate meeting at the school where SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson spoke about some of her goals for the SUNY System, which include bolstering online offerings and increasing faculty diversity.
• Nicholas Palumbo, interim director of leadership and service, was featured on 13 WHAM news along with Andrew Goodman Ambassador students for their efforts to register students to vote. Students who were featured in the interview included Dilynn Livesey, Leah Christman and Patrick Buckley.
• Michael Leroy Oberg, Distinguished Professor of History, was part of a discussion on WXXI’s Connections With Evan Dawson on Senator Elizabeth Warren’s DNA test and how it relates to Native American identity.
   
• Michael Leroy Oberg, Distinguished Professor of History, was interviewed for a Syracuse NewTimes article about Columbus Day and the efforts to establish an Indigenous Peoples Day. Oberg is currently working on a book about the history of the Onondaga Nation. The Onondaga Reservation is located just south of the city of Syracuse.
• Associate professor of psychology, James Allen, contributed an article, “Happiness is a Social Safety Net,” to the Livingston County News. Allen’s book, The Psychology of Happiness in the Modern World: A Social Psychological Approach, was published in 2017 by Springer Publishing.
• The Catholic Courier featured Bill Cook, Distinguished Teaching Professor and emeritus professor of history at SUNY Geneseo, in a story about his philanthropic work. The Bill Cook Foundation began in 2015 to provide educational opportunities for some of the world’s poorest children. With Cook devoting himself full-time to its operation, the foundation has raised nearly $1 million while helping children in some 23 countries in Africa, Central America, South America, Asia and Europe.
• Professor of philosophy Carlo Filice has written an essay, "Why is There a World," that appears in the October/November issue of Philosophy Now, a bimonthly magazine that aims to bring philosophical content to the wider public. Felice, who was on sabbatical during the Spring 2018 semester had an earlier essay published in the February/March issue of the same magazine entitled, "Free Will is Still Alive." To add to this prolific achievement, in May, CounterPunch published Filice's essay, “The First ‘Fake News' Story (Or, What the Serpent Would Have Said).” Both Philosophy Now and CounterPunch are open-access journals, though Philosophy Now has a four-article-per-month limit.

September 2018

• Carrie Johnson, the PREVENT coordinator in the College’s Title IX Office was featured on 13-WHAM, a Rochester area newscast, for "What Were You Wearing," an exhibit of clothing styles worn by men and women when they were sexually assaulted. The exhibit, hosted in the Kinetic Gallery in the McVittie College Union was brought to campus through the efforts of student Natalie Schluek ’21.
• Meaghan Arena, vice president of enrollment, was interviewed and quoted in a Chronicle of Higher Education special report, "Rural Colleges Make the Most of ‘Off the Beaten Path’ Locations."
• Associate professor of English and director of the Center of Integrative Learning, Lytton Smith was featured in a City Newspaper article, “Rochester’s Role in Translating Worldwide Women Authors.” Smith translates Icelandic literature to English. He was recently awarded a National Endowments of the Arts grant to translate “Blot” by Sigrun Pálsdóttir.
• Assistant professor of history Yvonne Seale lent her expertise in the coloration of religious statues, frescos and buildings from the Middle Ages for the Forbes article, “Why We Should See The Middle Ages in All its ‘Garish’ Colors.”

• Meaghan Arena, vice president of enrollment, was quoted in a Livingston County News story about students returning to Geneseo and the start of the 2018-19 academic year.
• Alana Coopersmith ‘19, a political science major with a minor in communications, served as an editorial intern at NYMetroParents this summer. She recently penned an article for the magazine about children’s learning styles and how it influences learning.
• Jun Okada, an associate professor of English whose research centers on Asian-American film, was quoted in The Christian Science Monitor about the casting controversy in the new film, Crazy Rich Asians.
• Faculty member Beth McCoy, Distinguished Teaching Professor of English, was a member of a panel of area college professors on WXXI's Connections with Evan Dawson who discussed inspiring college course and how they influenced creativity in their own course offerings.
• Geneseo alumnus Kaitlin Pfundstein ’18, was featured in the Long Island newspaper Newsday. Pfundstein, an English major with certification in adolescent education and a psychology minor, shared her experience with the post-graduation choices of graduate school or work.

July 2018

• Akil Aljaysh, adjunct lecturer of Arabic in the Department of Languages and Literatures, appeared on WXXI’s Connections with Evan Dawson. Aljaysh, who is from Iraq and also serves as a refugee cases manager at Catholic Family Center, was a guest for a discussion about the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

May 2018

• Dean of Students Lenny Sancilio, who also serves as president of the HazingPrevention.Org board of directors, was included in a Trusteeship Magazine story on dealing with hazing at colleges and universities. The magazine is published by the American Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.
   
• The Associated Press published a story about Geneseo student Derek Schrank running for the Greece, N.Y., school board. The story was picked up by numerous media across the state and country.
   
• The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle published an op-ed piece by Michael Oberg, SUNY Distinguished Professor of History, calling for increased state support for Native American SUNY students.

• Tom Matthews, associate dean for leadership and service, and student Kam Kostolansky, were interviewed by Channel 13 TV in Rochester for a story on Livingston CARE's recent hurricane relief trip to Puerto Rico. Other SUNY schools will be joining Geneseo in additional work trips to Puerto Rico as part of an initiative by Gov. Cuomo to aid the struggling island.
• In a story in U.S. News & World Report on Admitted Student Days, Director of Admissions Kim Harvey is quoted on the challenges of the college selection process.
• Betsy Colón, grants management associate, and seniors Brianna Pollard and Michael Wall were among guests on the WXXI radio program "Connections" with Evan Dawson during a discussion of hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico. The group discussed their recent trip to the island as part of a Livingston CARES hurricane relief effort. Listen to the program.

• An opinion feature by Heather Carrera, a nutrition and wellness coordinator in Campus Auxiliary Services, was published in the fall/winter issue of Campus Dining Today magazine. In the feature, Carrera laid out a series of tips and techniques for meeting students’ dietary needs and preferences. She included a broad selection of SUNY Geneseo examples, including how plant-based eating is prioritized in the College’s dining facilities and citing the College’s status as the #2 gluten-friendly campus in the country.

• A highly successful student registration campaign on the Geneseo campus has prompted the establishment of a new, on-campus polling place for students living on campus. The College and Livingston County Board of Elections collaborated in creating the new District 5 location for the Nov. 8 election, which will be Kuhl Gym. Students living off campus will vote in already-established community polling places. • Rachel Hall’s newly published award-winning book “Heirlooms” continues to receive attention across the country. Hall, professor of English and director of writing, received the G.S. Sharat Chandra Prize for Short Fiction by BkMk Press for the book, which was featured recently in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. She has an on-campus book signing scheduled Oct. 5 from 1-2 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble store in MacVittie Student Union.
